Musician Charli XCX has officially declared summer 2024 a brat summer. We’re being our unapologetic selves, doing what makes us happy (within reason) and living our best lives. In Canada and around the world, animals are joining in on the brat summer fun and we are so here for it.
Here are 5 animals who are having a brat summer:
1. This raccoon who sauntered onto a Toronto subway to make his evening commute home
In case you missed it, on August 1, Toronto subway riders made their commute home with a very well-behaved racoon. The raccoon made their way from Eglinton station up two stops to York Mills before being guided to safety outside. Brat score: 12/10

*Note: while raccoons are naturally curious creatures, this is not typical raccoon behaviour and could indicate that the animal is sick. If you ever come across a wild animal in need of assistance, please do not approach them. Reach out to your local wildlife rehabilitation centre for help.
2. These elephants who just wanted a little treat
You know elephants are smart, but did you know that they are so smart, they’ve learned not only how to cross roads at designated elephant crossings, but to do it strategically to get a little treat? Recently, in Thailand, elephants have been seen crossing the road right as trucks carrying sugarcane drive past – must be a coincidence. These elephants are completely innocent and very good. They deserve a little treat. Brat score: 13/10
3. This whale who just wanted to shoot their shot at the Paris Olympics
During the women’s surfing semifinals in Tahiti at the 2024 Paris Olympics, competitors were surprised when a new athlete entered the villa ocean. We’re still waiting for the judges’ score of this whale’s incredible performance. Brat score: 11/10
4. This donkey who ran away to live with his found family
This video of a donkey living with a herd of wild elk recently went viral and why wouldn’t it? A couple who saw the video believe the donkey was previously their pet and are very supportive of him being in his elk era. Brat score: 11/10
5. This dog who just wanted to play with his bestie
Earlier this summer, Bear the dog was playing outside when a deer decided to join in on the fun. The two played chase along the face and we love that for them. Brat score: 10/10
