5 ways to advocate for animals this election
Blog
With a federal election underway, political candidates are paying close attention to what matters most to voters. This is our chance to make sure animals are on their agenda.
Here’s how you can be an effective advocate for animals:
1. Speak up for animals when candidates visit or call
Candidates and their teams are going door-to-door to speak with voters. Be ready to tell them that you care about animal welfare and ask where they stand on key issues. Ask questions such as:
- What will you do to advance protection for animals?
- Did you know that World Animal Protection has submitted platform proposals to your party with practical ways to address the wildlife trade and industrial animal agriculture?
- Do you care about these issues? If so, will you support their proposals?
2. Ask questions at local debates
Candidates take notice of the issues that come up in public forums. If you attend an all-party debate, ask about their stance on animal welfare.
- Sample question: What will your party do to strengthen Canada’s laws on the wildlife trade and factory farming to protect animals, public health and the environment?
3. Use social media to make your voice heard
Candidates and parties monitor social media for voter sentiment. Tag them in posts, comment on their platforms and share World Animal Protection’s election content to show that animal welfare is a priority.
4. Display a sign to show your support
Print out and post our "I vote for animals" decal on your door or window. It’s a simple yet powerful way to remind election candidates that animal protection is important to you before they even knock.
5. Vote with animals in mind
