With Halloween upon us, eerie images of mysterious creatures begin to creep into our imaginations. These animals, often feared and misunderstood, take centre stage in spooky decorations and chilling tales. However, the reality is that these creatures play vital roles in maintaining healthy ecosystems.

Trigger warning: This article contains images of animals that some people may find unsettling or frightening, including bats, snakes, spiders, coyotes and crows. The purpose is to highlight the vital roles these species play in ecosystems, challenging common misconceptions and fears.

Let’s dive into the origins of these fears and discover how we can support these important species.

Bats: the nighttime guardians

Bats are often associated with Halloween because of their nocturnal habits and links to vampire myths. Despite their eerie reputation, bats play a critical role in controlling insect populations and helping to reduce insect-borne diseases. Additionally, some bat species pollinate plants and disperse seeds, making them vital to plant diversity.

You can support bats by installing bat houses and minimizing pesticide use, which can harm their food sources.

Snakes: the silent protectors

Snakes trigger deep-seated fears due to myths and ancient associations with danger. While some snakes are venomous, most are harmless and help keep ecosystems balanced by controlling populations of small animals like rodents, which can spread disease or damage crops.

To encourage snakes, create natural spaces in your yard with ground cover and avoid harming any snakes you may encounter.

Spiders: the invisible allies

Many people fear spiders because of their appearance and association with venom, but most spiders are actually harmless to humans. These fascinating creatures help maintain a balance in nature by controlling insect populations.

Supporting spiders is as simple as letting them be—avoid using insecticides and allow them to go about their beneficial work.

Coyotes: nature’s balancers

Coyotes have a reputation as sneaky predators, but they play an essential role in maintaining balance in both rural and urban environments. They help regulate populations of small animals like rodents and rabbits, contributing to a healthy ecosystem.

To peacefully coexist with coyotes, secure garbage, avoid leaving pet food outside and keep small pets indoors at night.

Crows and ravens: the clean-up crew

Crows and ravens are often linked to death in folklore, partly due to their black feathers and scavenging habits. However, they provide an invaluable service by cleaning up carcasses, which helps prevent the spread of disease.

Respect their ecological role by reducing habitat destruction and appreciating their importance in nature.
