McDonald's Canada testing new McVeggie burger

McDonald’s Canada is taking a step in the right direction by introducing the McVeggie – a new plant-based burger currently being tested at select locations across the country.

This move comes after thousands of World Animal Protection Canada supporters urged McDonald’s to add a plant-based burger to its menu.

While many fast-food chains across Canada already offer at least one plant-based burger, McDonald’s has been lagging behind. In our 2024 Moving the Menu report, which ranked 23 Canadian restaurant chains on their plant-based offerings, McDonald’s scored poorly, receiving a “F” due to its lack of plant-based meal options.

Why plant-based matters

Recent research found that if Canadians reduce their consumption of animal-based foods by 50% by 2030, we could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 16%. That’s a major impact on climate change!

Fast-food giants like McDonald’s have an enormous influence on consumer habits. By adding more plant-based options, they can help shift diets toward a more sustainable and humane food system.

The introduction of the McVeggie is an exciting first step in the right direction – but we need to encourage McDonald's to keep it on the menu permanently!

Where can you try the McVeggie?

From March 18 to April 14, Canadians will have the chance to try the new veggie burger at select locations in:

• British Columbia: Langley, Richmond, Surrey
• Ontario: Brampton, Windsor
• New Brunswick: Dieppe, Moncton, Riverview, Sussex
