Xama, the rescued jaguar

Rescued jaguar released back to the wild

Blog

Xamã becomes the first male jaguar to be rehabilitated and released back to nature in the Amazon after two-years of recovery.

In October, Xamã made history as the first male jaguar to be rehabilitated and released back into the Amazon rainforest. After being rescued as an orphaned cub during Brazil’s 2022 wildfires, Xamã’s journey to freedom has been one of resilience, recovery and hope.

Thanks to a coordinated effort between World Animal Protection, Onçafari and local organizations, and the support of compassionate animal lovers like you, Xamã was given a second chance at a wild life.

Over two years of dedicated rehabilitation, Xamã transformed from a vulnerable cub into a strong, independent jaguar, ready to thrive in the wild. Xamã’s release marks a critical milestone for jaguar conservation. Equipped with a radio collar, he will help scientists better understand male jaguar behavior in the Amazon, providing invaluable insights for protecting these apex predators and their threatened habitat.

During his release, camera traps documented Xamã’s first steps into freedom. The footage is a powerful testament to resilience, hope and the impact of global conservation efforts.
