Demand that McDonald’s offer plant-based menu options!
Sign this petition now to urge McDonald’s to offer plant-based menu items for the benefit of animals, people and the planet.
Intensive animal agriculture (aka ‘factory farming’) is responsible for the suffering of billions of animals around the globe. What’s more, animal agriculture is a leading cause of biodiversity loss and climate change. The industry accounts for 14.5% of greenhouse gas emissions and is the biggest contributor of methane and nitrous oxide – two of the three main greenhouse gases.
Due to their size and scale, serving food to millions of Canadians daily, and their strong brand and marketing strategies, Canada’s largest restaurant chains have the power to change people’s diets and our food system.
In our latest report, “Moving the Menu”, we rank 25 of Canada’s largest and most recognizable family and quick service restaurants on their plant-based offerings and commitment to promoting sustainable diets.
McDonald’s scored among the lowest, receiving a grade of “F”, because they offer no significant plant-based menu items. While other fast-food chains in Canada and around the world are introducing plant-based menu options, McDonald’s is going in the opposite direction by introducing the Big Arch, a new burger that is nearly twice the size of a Big Mac.
It is unacceptable that a global fast food restaurant chain like McDonald’s does not offer a plant-based burger for their customers. Eating less meat is one of the most powerful ways consumers can reduce their carbon footprint, and a multi-billion-dollar company like McDonald’s has both the responsibility and the power to help influence consumer choice by encouraging increased plant-based consumption.
Demand that McDonald’s:
- offer a plant-based burger in their restaurants across Canada at the same price or lower than the comparable meat item
- promote plant-based eating to their customers as a low-carbon, healthier choice
- commit to a meat reduction policy where they increase the offerings of plant-based menu items over time
